How to search Reddit: operators, filters and tools that work
How to search Reddit properly: the operators Reddit supports, searching by subreddit, user and date, comment search, and the tools that fill the gaps. Tested Oct 2026.

To search Reddit well, use its operators: quotes for exact phrases, subreddit:, author:, title: and site: with no space after the colon, and AND, OR and NOT in capitals. Then pick the right result type. Reddit search has five (Posts, Communities, Comments, Media and People), and the default isn't always the one you want. We tested each operator on October 17, 2026. The results are below.
Reddit's search has a reputation for being bad, and some of that is earned. There is no exact date range, comment search works differently from post search, and anything deleted is gone. This guide covers what works, how to search by subreddit, user and date, and which outside tools fill the gaps.
The five things Reddit search can find
Reddit's help article How does Reddit search work? (checked October 17, 2026) lists five content types:
| Tab | What it finds | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Text, image, video and link posts | Most questions |
| Communities | Subreddits | Finding where a topic lives |
| Comments | Individual comments | Advice and recommendations, which mostly sit in replies |
| Media | Images, videos, GIFs | Finding a picture or clip |
| People | User accounts | Finding a specific user (not available inside a community) |
People tend to skip the Comments tab, and they shouldn't. For questions like "which CRM should I use" or "is this worth it", the useful answers are usually in comments, not post titles.
Reddit also has an AI search. According to the help center, you can type a question and select the Ask button to get an answer built from posts and comments. It works for a quick overview, but you can't control which threads it read.
Reddit search operators that work
Reddit's Available search features article lists the field operators it supports. Most people get tripped up by one rule: there's no space after the colon. author:cats works and author: cats doesn't.
| Operator | What it matches | Example |
|---|---|---|
author: | Who submitted the post | author:reddit |
subreddit: | The post's subreddit | subreddit:sales |
title: | Words in the title | title:"cold email" |
selftext: | Words in the post body | selftext:spreadsheet |
site: | The domain a link post points to | site:github.com |
url: | Text in the linked URL | url:docs |
flair: | The post's link flair | flair:question |
self: | Text posts only (true) or link posts only (false) | self:true |
You can stack them, as in Reddit's own example: cats subreddit:pics site:imgur.com. To search a field for several words, wrap them in quotes: title:"kitten gif".
Boolean operators and grouping
Reddit search supports AND, OR and NOT. They're case sensitive, so write them in capitals, and parentheses group them. Reddit's help page notes that hedgehog NOT sonic OR shadow returns very different results from hedgehog NOT (sonic OR shadow). If a query with several operators returns something odd, add parentheses before changing anything else.
What we found when we tested them
On October 17, 2026, we ran three operator queries through ChatterAPI's Reddit search, which accepts Reddit's operators inside the query:
title:"cold email" subreddit:sales, past year, newest first, returned 10 results. All 10 titles contained "cold email" and all 10 were in r/sales.site:github.com subreddit:selfhosted, past year, returned 25 results, all 25 linking to github.com. The same query limited to the past week and sorted by new returned nothing. If a filtered search comes back empty, widen the time window before you rewrite the query.- A comment search for
arctic shift deletedreturned 10 comments, and 8 of them contained all three words.
In an earlier test on October 14, a quoted phrase returned 25 of 25 posts containing the exact phrase, compared with 5 of 25 without quotes. That test and the other operator tests are in our Reddit search API guide. Of everything you can type into the query, quotes change the results most.
How to search one subreddit
There are two ways to do it, and both work:
- From the community: open the subreddit and use its search bar. Reddit shows the community name as a pill in the bar, which means your search stays inside that community. Select "Show results from all of Reddit" to search everything again.
- With the operator: add
subreddit:nameto any query, from anywhere. Use this one when you want to search several communities one after another, or save the query.
If you don't know yet which subreddit covers a topic, search the Communities tab first. The free subreddit finder does the same thing from a keyword.
How to search a Reddit user's posts
To find what one person posted about something, combine author:username with your keywords. author:spez subreddit:reddit search updates follows the shape of Reddit's own example. If you need to find the account first, use the People tab, which Reddit doesn't show when you're searching inside a community.
author: only finds posts that still exist under that name. To see everything someone has posted that is still public, go to their profile, which is quicker, or use the free Reddit post history and comment history tools. To find accounts by keyword, try the Reddit user search tool.
How to search Reddit by date
Date filtering is where Reddit search falls shortest. You get preset windows (past hour, day, week, month, year or all time) and no custom range, so reddit.com has no way to ask for "posts from March 2024".
What works instead:
- Narrow by window, then sort by new. A "past year" search sorted by new gets you most of the way for anything recent.
- Arctic Shift has a search page with After and Before fields in UTC, plus subreddit and author filters. It also keeps content that was deleted after capture, so it can find things Reddit's search can't. It's a volunteer project with no uptime promise; the Reddit archive guide covers its status.
- On Google, a common workaround is adding
site:reddit.comto the search and using Google's own date tools. That only finds what Google has indexed, and the subreddit filtering is less precise.
How to search Reddit comments
People often confuse the two kinds of comment search.
To search comments across Reddit, run a search and pick the Comments tab. The help center notes one quirk: post search results "only need to include some of your search words", but comment and user searches "must currently include all of your search words." A long comment query can return nothing while the same query on posts returns plenty, so use fewer, more specific words.
To search inside one thread on desktop, use the search bar by the comments section, below the comment box. On the apps, tap the search icon on the post. This is the fastest way to find one reply in a 2,000-comment thread.
The free Reddit comment search tool searches comments across Reddit by keyword and can filter by author.
Tools that fill the gaps
| You need | Use |
|---|---|
| A quick answer, most topics | Reddit search with quotes and one operator |
| An exact date range, or deleted posts | Arctic Shift search |
| Results from Google's index | Google with site:reddit.com |
| Posts by keyword without logging in | The free Reddit post search tool |
| The same searches from code or an AI agent | A Reddit search API |
Search Reddit from code
If you search Reddit often to monitor a keyword, feed an agent or build a lead list, a script works better than the search box. ChatterAPI's GET /v1/reddit/search accepts the same operators in q, adds subreddit, sort and time parameters, and costs 2 credits per page of up to 25 posts. It's independent and not affiliated with Reddit, and you don't need a Reddit developer account.
Here is the site: test from above:
curl "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/reddit/search?q=site%3Agithub.com+subreddit%3Aselfhosted&time=year" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
The response, captured October 17, 2026 and trimmed to two of the 25 posts:

For the next page, pass page.nextCursor back as cursor. Comment search has its own endpoint, GET /v1/reddit/comments/search, and AI agents can run both as reddit_search and reddit_search_comments on the MCP server at https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp. The Reddit search API guide covers pagination, sort options and a keyword monitor script.
Try a better search now
Start with one quoted phrase and one operator, subreddit: or title:. If that comes back empty, widen the time window. To run the same searches from code, sign up with Google for 100 free credits, which is enough for 50 search pages and needs no card. Plans start at $19 a month for 25,000 credits.
