Arctic Shift alternative
ChatterAPI is not an archive. It searches live Reddit as far back as Reddit's own search goes, so it can't bring back posts that were deleted or that Reddit never indexed. Arctic Shift is a free archive of Reddit posts and comments, with monthly dumps, an API and a search tool. On Oct 14, 2026 it was online and still ingesting, after a short outage on Oct 9 and 10.
What Arctic Shift is
- Arctic Shift describes itself as a project to make Reddit data accessible to researchers, moderators and everyone else, through large dumps, an API or a web interface. source
- It runs on the photon-reddit.com domain, which belongs to Photon, a Reddit desktop client by the same developer. That's why people search for it as Arctic Shift Photon. source
- Its API searches posts and comments by author, subreddit, keyword and date range. It also covers subreddit rules, wikis and user lookups. The docs say there are no uptime or performance guarantees and that rate limits change with server load. source
- Monthly dumps are listed as Academic Torrents downloads. The September 2026 dump went up on Oct 11, 2026. source
- The download page links a torrent for every month through 2026-09. The combined 2005 to 2025 torrent page is struck through, and only a magnet link is left in its place. source
- Starting the week of Sept 28, 2026, Reddit's new comment IDs stopped increasing in order. That breaks any archive that scans IDs in sequence. source
- On Oct 2, 2026 the maintainer wrote that he has a workaround. It is slower than ID scans and captures 90% or more of comments, ideally 95%. source
- Arctic Shift was down on Oct 9 and 10, 2026. The maintainer called it a temporary issue and said on Oct 10 that it was back. source
- When we queried its API on Oct 14, 2026, the newest comment it returned had been posted that same morning. source
- Reddit says public API access will close for all remaining apps in March 2027. Nobody outside Reddit can say yet what that means for archives like Arctic Shift. source
When Arctic Shift is the better choice
- You need content that has since been deleted or removed from Reddit. ChatterAPI reads live Reddit and can't return it.
- You need a user's full history or a subreddit's complete record over many years, sorted by date.
- You want to download whole months of Reddit data and process it offline.
- You are a moderator checking an account's past posts, and a free tool is enough.
When ChatterAPI fits
- You need what is on Reddit now: current posts, scores and comment counts, searched across all time with Reddit's own search.
- You want a paid API with an API key and per-call credits instead of a free service that publishes no uptime guarantees.
- You also need X data on the same key and the same credit balance.
- You want an AI agent to search Reddit through a hosted MCP server.

Moving a live search from Arctic Shift
- Split your Arctic Shift queries into two groups: lookups of old or deleted content, and searches for what is on Reddit now.
- Keep the first group on an archive or the dumps. We can't serve deleted content.
- For the second group, replace the posts search with Reddit search and set time to all.
- Replace date filters with the time window and sort settings, then page through results with the cursor.
