Reddit and X tools for your AI agent

A hosted MCP server. Paste one config and Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, VS Code or Claude Desktop can search Reddit and X. Every result includes what that call cost.

Server URLhttps://api.chatterapi.com/mcp

Install

Pick your client, paste the snippet with your key, and restart. Each tab tells you where the config lives and how to check that it worked.

Where: Run once in your terminal

bash
claude mcp add --transport http chatterapi https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"

Set CHATTERAPI_KEY in your shell first, or paste the key in place of $CHATTERAPI_KEY.

Check it worked: Run claude mcp list. chatterapi shows as connected. Then ask Claude to search Reddit for something.

Format checked Oct 14, 2026 against Claude Code's docs.

Credits in every result

Every tool result includes credits.charged and credits.remaining, so the agent always knows what it spent. When the balance runs out, the result carries instructionsForAgent, and the agent tells you to top up instead of retrying.

For agents

You can also let your agent set itself up. Paste this line with your key:

Set up ChatterAPI from https://chatterapi.com/llms.txt with my API key.

Budget your agent

  • Build with a test key

It returns recorded samples and costs 0, so a prompt that loops while you tune it spends nothing.

  • Ask it to check the balance

Tell the agent to read credits.remaining and stop below a number you pick.

  • Keep pages small

Pass a limit. Each page is one charge, and short pages keep the agent's context clean.

Troubleshooting

401 invalid_key or missing_key
The header is missing or the key is wrong. Keys start with ca_live_ or ca_test_. Create one on the Keys page.
My client has no place for headers
Use the mcp-remote bridge shown in the Claude Desktop tab. It runs locally and adds the header for you.
Tools do not appear
Restart the client after editing the config, and check the JSON is valid. Then check curl -I https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp answers instead of timing out.
402 insufficient_credits
The balance is empty. Top up or upgrade on the Billing page.
The 18+ tools are missing
They appear only after you turn on 18+ tools in Settings. Restart the client so it lists tools again.
npx fails
Install Node 18 or newer.
Behind a corporate proxy
Set HTTPS_PROXY for the client.

Questions

What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is a standard way for AI apps like Claude, Cursor and Codex to call outside tools. You add a server once, and from then on the agent can use its tools.
Does it cost more than REST?
No. The tools are the same and each call costs the same credits. MCP and REST draw from one shared balance.
Can I use a test key?
Yes. With a test key every tool returns a recorded sample and costs 0 credits, which helps while you write prompts.
Which transport does it use?
Streamable HTTP, stateless. Clients that only speak stdio can connect through mcp-remote.
Can I restrict which tools the agent sees?
Most clients let you turn off tools per server. We do not offer per-key tool scopes yet.
