ChatterAPI vs PRAW

PRAW is a free, open source Python library for Reddit's own API. It handles rate limits for you. You still need a Reddit account, a registered app and Reddit's approval, and it inherits Reddit's 2026 changes. ChatterAPI is a hosted read-only API for Reddit and X that you call from any language with one key. If you need to post, vote or moderate from Python, use PRAW.

What PRAW is

  • PRAW is the Python Reddit API Wrapper. The latest release on PyPI is 8.0.3, uploaded Aug 12, 2026. It needs Python 3.10 or later. source
  • It is open source under the BSD 2-Clause licence, and its README says it follows all of Reddit's API rules internally. source
  • Read-only mode needs a client_id, a client_secret and a user_agent. Authorized mode also needs a username and password. source
  • The quick start says you need a Reddit account to access Reddit's API. source
  • PRAW reads Reddit's rate limit headers. When the wait is short (5 seconds by default), it sleeps and retries. Otherwise it raises an exception. source

Choose PRAW when

  • You need to act on Reddit from Python: post, comment, vote or moderate.
  • You already have an approved Reddit app and want to use it directly.
  • You want a free library and don't mind running and maintaining it yourself.
  • You need endpoints we don't cover, such as inbox or moderation queues.

Choose ChatterAPI when

  • You only read public data and don't want to register a Reddit app or wait for approval.
  • You work in a language other than Python, or from an AI agent over MCP.
  • You want X data with the same key.
  • You want comment trees returned in one call with a cursor, instead of expanding MoreComments yourself.

Questions

Is PRAW free?
Yes. PRAW is open source under the BSD 2-Clause licence. Reddit's API terms and limits still apply to what you do with it.
Does PRAW still work in 2026?
PRAW talks to Reddit's own API, so it works as long as your app has access. Reddit's changelog of Oct 8, 2026 says it stops taking new requests for public API access on Oct 31, 2026.
Can I use ChatterAPI from Python?
Yes. It is a plain HTTPS API, so the requests library works. The example on this page has a Python tab.
Can ChatterAPI post to Reddit like PRAW?
No. Reddit support is read-only.
