PRAW alternative

PRAW is an open source Python package for Reddit's official API. It needs your own Reddit app credentials: a client ID, a client secret and a user agent. ChatterAPI is a hosted API and MCP server for Reddit and X. It needs one API key and no Reddit app.

What PRAW is

  • PRAW, the Python Reddit API Wrapper, describes itself as a Python package that allows for simple access to Reddit's API. source
  • A read only PRAW instance needs a client ID, a client secret and a user agent. The docs say the ID and secret are needed to access Reddit's API as a script application, and point to Reddit's First Steps Guide to create them. source
  • PRAW is licensed under the Simplified BSD License and supports Python 3.10 and later. source
  • The README says PRAW internally follows all of Reddit's API rules, so you do not need to add sleep calls to your code. source

When PRAW is the better choice

  • You write Python and want a free, open source library with no extra vendor in the path.
  • You need to act as a Reddit user through Reddit's official API, for example to post, reply or moderate.
  • You already have an approved Reddit app and its credentials.
  • You want PRAW to handle Reddit's API rules for you inside your own process.

When ChatterAPI fits

  • You don't want to create or manage a Reddit app and its credentials.
  • You work in a language other than Python, or call plain HTTP.
  • You want Reddit and X data with one key.
  • You want an AI agent to search Reddit and X through a hosted MCP server.

Moving from PRAW

  1. Find the read calls in your PRAW code, such as subreddit search, submission lookups and redditor lookups.
  2. Replace each one with the matching HTTP call (Reddit search, thread or user).
  3. Send your ChatterAPI API key in the request header instead of a client ID, secret and user agent.
  4. Keep PRAW for any write actions that have to run as your own Reddit account.
curl "https://chatterapi.com/v1/reddit/search?q=your+brand&sort=new" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
