Best MCP servers for Reddit and X data in 2026

The best MCP servers for Reddit and X data, compared: auth, read or write, stars and last commit checked on 2026-10-14, plus X's own server and when to self-host.

The best MCP servers for Reddit and X data in 2026 are Reddit MCP Buddy or jordanburke's reddit-mcp-server if you have Reddit OAuth credentials, X's own hosted MCP server if you have an X developer app, and a hosted API like ChatterAPI if you want both platforms behind one key without applying to either developer program. The right pick comes down to which credentials you can get.

That changed this year. Reddit now blocks unauthenticated API traffic and has stopped self-serve app creation, so several servers near the top of the usual MCP server lists no longer work in their default mode. Below we compare the options for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Codex: what each one needs, what it can read or write, and how active its repo is. We checked every repo and doc page on 2026-10-14.

Reddit MCP servers

Why most Reddit MCP servers now need credentials

Most Reddit MCP servers wrap Reddit's Data API, so they inherit its rules. Reddit's Data API Wiki says clients "must authenticate with a registered OAuth token" and that traffic without OAuth will be blocked (checked 2026-10-14). The jordanburke README states the practical effect plainly: "Anonymous mode no longer works," and Reddit "closed self-service OAuth app creation in November 2025." New developers now file a request through Reddit's support form and wait for approval. Our guide on how to get a Reddit API key walks through that request.

A second deadline is coming. Some servers fall back to Reddit's public RSS feeds when they have no credentials. TechCrunch reported on 2026-09-30 that "RSS support will cease on November 13," and that unregistered apps lose API access after January 12, 2027. A reddit mcp setup that depends on RSS has about a month left.

Reddit MCP Buddy

This is the most-starred Reddit server we found. It has five tools: browse_subreddit, search_reddit, get_post_details, user_analysis and an offline reddit_explain. Install it in Claude Code with claude mcp add --transport stdio reddit-mcp-buddy -s user -- npx -y reddit-mcp-buddy.

The README is upfront about where things stand in 2026. Without credentials only browse_subreddit works, and its results come from RSS, with score, comment count and NSFW flags returned as null. Search, comments and user analysis need a Reddit client id and secret (60 requests per minute), or all four credentials for 100 per minute. One X user's recipe for product research is exactly this install plus "free reddit credentials" (@knoxtwts). But "free credentials" now means an approved Reddit app, and the README's setup steps still point to the old prefs/apps form.

Pick it if you already hold a Reddit script app from before November 2025 and want a clean, read-only server.

reddit-mcp-server (jordanburke)

This is the only Reddit server in our list with write tools: create posts, reply, edit, delete, save. It also has the most recent commit (2026-09-27) and the most current auth docs. Reads need REDDIT_CLIENT_ID and REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET. Writes also need your Reddit username and password. It ships a "safe mode" for writes and an optional bot-disclosure footer, a responsible default if you let an agent post.

Pick it if you need an agent to post or reply on Reddit and you're willing to give the server your account password. Read the subreddit's rules first. An agent posting on a schedule is the fastest way to get an account banned.

mcp-server-reddit and mcp-reddit

Both are small Python servers built on the redditwarp library. Hawstein's mcp-server-reddit creates an anonymous client in its source (redditwarp.SYNC.Client()) and offers no way to pass credentials, so expect it to fail under Reddit's current rules. adhikasp's mcp-reddit reads REDDIT_CLIENT_ID, REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET and REDDIT_REFRESH_TOKEN from the environment if you set them, even though its README shows an empty env. Its last commit was in May 2025, before the auth changes. Both still show up in MCP directories with high star counts, so check the last commit date before trusting the stars.

Twitter and X MCP servers

X's own MCP server

X runs a hosted twitter mcp server. TechCrunch covered the launch on 2026-06-30, and X's MCP docs (checked 2026-10-14) describe it as a Streamable HTTP server at https://api.x.com/mcp. Its tools cover post lookup, full-archive search, user lookup, timelines, mentions, bookmarks, trends, news and draft Articles.

Either way, you need your own app in the X Developer Portal. The simple route puts the app's Bearer token in an Authorization header and gives you read-only access with no user context. The full route runs X's open-source xurl bridge, which does an OAuth 2.0 login in your browser and refreshes the token. X's docs say that route is "Required for writes." TechCrunch reported that the server doesn't work with X's write endpoints for publishing posts, so treat it as a tool for reading and bookmarks, not a posting bot. Calls run on your X API plan. If you see client-not-enrolled, the docs' troubleshooting table tells you to move the app to "Pay-per-use + Production". We did not find MCP-specific pricing in X's docs.

Pick it if you already have an X developer app and only need X. Because it's the first-party option, it will track X's API changes.

Open-source Twitter MCP servers

  • xdevplatform/xmcp is the earlier, self-hosted version from X's developer platform org. At startup it turns X's OpenAPI spec into MCP tools (well over 100, filterable with X_API_TOOL_ALLOWLIST), and it needs a consumer key, secret and Bearer token. X's docs now point to the hosted server instead.
  • EnesCinr/twitter-mcp is the one most lists recommend. It has two tools, post_tweet and search_tweets, needs four X API credentials, and its last commit was in July 2025. That's fine for a demo but thin for research.

Both need an X developer account, so you still have to apply for one either way.

Multi-platform social MCP servers

Searching "social media MCP" mostly turns up servers that publish, not servers that read. Postiz, for example, calls itself an "agentic social media scheduler." Schedulers have their uses, but they won't search Reddit threads or export the replies to a tweet. When we looked for one server that reads both Reddit and X, the only options we found were hosted data APIs.

ChatterAPI: one hosted MCP server for both

ChatterAPI runs a hosted MCP server at https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp. It works in Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and VS Code, takes one key for both Reddit and X, and doesn't need a Reddit or X developer account. To install it in Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http chatterapi https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"

Configs for the other clients are on the MCP server page and in the MCP docs.

On 2026-10-14, tools/list returned 36 tools: 14 Reddit reads, 13 X reads, 4 X actions, 3 cross-platform tools and 2 free account tools. Two 18+ Reddit tools only show up after you turn them on in settings. Each tool name is its REST id with the dots replaced by underscores.

The Reddit tools only read. X actions run from X accounts you connect in the dashboard, within safe daily limits. A failed call costs 0 credits. The endpoint docs have the full list.

A real tools/call

When Claude decides to search Reddit, your client sends this. We recorded the response below with a test key and trimmed it to the useful fields. A test key returns one real sample per tool for free.

curl https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":3,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"reddit_search","arguments":{"q":"best crm for small business"}}}'
{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "id": 3,
  "result": {
    "content": [{ "type": "text", "text": "{\"data\":[...],\"page\":{...},\"credits\":{...}}" }],
    "structuredContent": {
      "data": [
        {
          "id": "1wdihhj",
          "fullname": "t3_1wdihhj",
          "title": "What CRM should a small business use?",
          "author": "NotedWhisky",
          "subreddit": "CRM",
          "url": "https://www.reddit.com/r/CRM/comments/1wdihhj/what_crm_should_a_small_business_use/",
          "score": 51,
          "numComments": 186,
          "createdAt": "2026-09-11T14:52:16.000Z",
          "nsfw": false
        }
      ],
      "page": { "nextCursor": "AX-vad04…", "hasMore": true },
      "credits": { "charged": 0, "remaining": 719 }
    }
  }
}

The sample held 25 posts, which is one Reddit page, and a live key charges 2 credits for it. Clients that don't read structuredContent get the same JSON in content[0].text. Every result ends with credits.remaining, so an agent can stop before its credits run out. Before a long loop, have the agent call chatterapi_account, which is free. The test keys guide explains the free sample mode.

When an open-source server is the better pick

A hosted API is not always the right choice, and the case against one deserves a fair hearing.

  • If you already have credentials, you may not need one. A Reddit script app from before November 2025, or an X developer app on a plan you already pay for, means the open-source servers and X's hosted server cost you nothing extra. A third-party API adds a bill and a vendor.
  • If you want first-party data, X's MCP server is X itself. Use it when your use case needs a direct relationship with the platform, for compliance or a commercial agreement.
  • If you need to post on Reddit, look elsewhere. ChatterAPI's Reddit side is read-only by design, and jordanburke's server is the option with write tools.
  • If you care about what the platforms intend, note that Reddit's stated reason for the 2026 changes is commercial scraping and AI bots. In r/redditdev, u/shiruken replied to a thread about archive tools: "Services like those are literally why Reddit is shutting down the Public API" (comment). That argument applies to any third-party source, ours included.

Wes Bos made the opposite case in a post with nearly 8,000 likes: "Reddit won't let Claude access threads / X won't let ChatGPT read tweets / It's starting." (@wesbos). Platforms are deciding which agents get in, and developers without an approved app are routing around that. Whichever route you take, read Reddit's and X's terms for your use case. For background on the official routes, see our Reddit API guide.

How to choose among the best MCP servers for social data

  1. If you have Reddit OAuth credentials and only need Reddit reads, use Reddit MCP Buddy.
  2. If you need an agent to post on Reddit, use jordanburke's reddit-mcp-server with safe mode on.
  3. If you have an X developer app and only need X, use X's hosted MCP server.
  4. If you need both platforms, or can't get either developer account, use a hosted API such as ChatterAPI.
  5. If you found a server in a directory, check its last commit and whether it handles OAuth before you trust the stars.

For a worked example of an agent using these tools, see how to find customer pain points on Reddit with Claude.

FAQ

Is there an official X MCP server?
Yes. X hosts one at api.x.com/mcp, announced on June 30, 2026. You connect through X's open-source xurl bridge or with an app-only Bearer token. Either way you need your own app in the X Developer Portal, and calls run under your own X API access and plan.
Is there an official Reddit MCP server?
No. As of 2026-10-14 Reddit does not publish an MCP server. The Reddit MCP servers people use are open-source projects that call Reddit's Data API with your own OAuth credentials, or hosted third-party APIs like ChatterAPI, which is independent of Reddit.
Do Reddit MCP servers work without API keys?
Mostly not anymore. Reddit blocks unauthenticated API traffic, so a server with no credentials either fails or falls back to Reddit's RSS feeds, and Reddit says it will stop serving those on November 13, 2026. Plan on OAuth credentials or a hosted API.
Can one MCP server cover both Reddit and X?
Of the servers we checked, only the hosted APIs do. Each open-source server covers one platform, so you would run two and manage two sets of credentials. ChatterAPI's hosted server puts Reddit and X tools behind one key and one credit balance.
