MCP server

Updated

A hosted MCP server that gives agents the same tools as the REST API, billed in the same credits.

Endpoint

URLhttps://api.chatterapi.com/mcp
TransportStreamable HTTP, stateless
AuthAuthorization: Bearer ca_live_... (or ca_test_...) on every request

If the key is missing or wrong, you get HTTP 401, with the usual error object in the JSON-RPC error's data.

Install

Pick your client. Each tab links to that client's own docs, which we checked on the date shown. The MCP server page has more detail and troubleshooting.

Tool names

An MCP tool name is the tool id with its dots replaced by underscores, since some clients reject dots. So reddit.search becomes reddit_search. REST paths and these docs keep the dotted id.

Two extra tools are free. chatterapi_account returns your balance, plan, reset date and rate limit, and chatterapi_list_tools returns a compact table of tools and costs.

Each tool's description states its cost, so the agent can budget before calling it.

Result format

A result is one text item holding compact JSON { data, page, credits }, plus the same object as structuredContent for clients that read it. Any list longer than 25 rows is cut to 25, with a note saying how many rows were left out.

Errors in MCP

Business errors come back as a tool result with isError: true and never as a protocol error, so clients don't retry them blindly. The text is <code>: <message> followed by the instructionsForAgent line, and the codes match REST. See Errors.

18+ tools

18+ tools show up in tools/list only once the account has turned on 18+ tools in Settings. Restart the client after that so it lists tools again. If you pass nsfw: true to another tool without the setting, you get scope_denied.

Test keys and limits

Test keys also work in MCP. Tools return recorded samples and cost 0. MCP calls share your account's requests-per-second limit with REST, and they appear on the Usage page with surface mcp.
