Best Twitter monitoring tools in 2026, compared
The best Twitter monitoring tools in 2026, from X's own search and X Pro to Syften, KWatch, Octolens and Brand24: X coverage, alerts and prices as listed.

The best Twitter monitoring tool depends on what you're watching. For cheap keyword tracking, look at KWatch.io and Syften. Octolens suits developer-tool and B2B teams that want an API and webhooks. Brand24, Mention, Hootsuite, Sprinklr and Brandwatch fit teams that also need reports and sentiment. If checking by hand is enough, X's own advanced search and saved searches are free. X Pro (the old TweetDeck) now requires the Premium+ subscription.
This post compares tools. To write the monitor yourself, see XAutoDM's developer walkthrough on monitoring X mentions programmatically, or our post on Twitter keyword alerts, which has a full script. We checked everything below on each vendor's site on Oct 14, 2026.

Monitoring Twitter for free with X itself
X still gives you three manual tools. Advanced search filters by words, exact phrases, excluded words, accounts, replies, mentions, language, place and date. You can save a search and reopen it from the search box. In the mobile app you can also turn on post notifications for a specific account, and X tells you when that account posts. X's help center doesn't document any keyword alert, so a saved search is only useful if you remember to open it.
TweetDeck used to cover this with live search columns. It's now X Pro, and X's Premium page lists "Access to X Pro" under "Only for Premium+ Tier". On Oct 14, 2026, Premium+ was listed at $40 a month on the web in the US. A social media manager in r/socialmedia put the change this way: "half my week used to live in TweetDeck columns. That's over" (post). The same post describes native search as something that "Works, but you babysit it and there's no alerting."
Alert tools that watch X
These tools take your keywords and handles and push matches to you. They sit in the middle of the market, cheaper than a suite and more automatic than a saved search.
Syften
Syften is built around communities. Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky, GitHub and others come with the plan, and X is an add-on at $40 a month on Standard and PRO, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. It lists a target delay of up to 15 minutes for X and under a minute for Reddit. Alerts go to email, RSS or the API on every plan, Slack from Standard, and webhooks and MCP on PRO. Pick it if Reddit and developer communities matter as much as X.
KWatch.io
KWatch.io covers X, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit and Hacker News. X is only on the paid plans, starting with Essential at $19 a month, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. Webhooks, Slack and API access start on Business at $79. It's the low-cost option when X and LinkedIn are both on your list.
Octolens
Octolens watches X alongside Reddit, LinkedIn, Bluesky, GitHub, Hacker News and more, and every plan includes an API, webhooks and an MCP server. Pro is $159 a month billed annually, as listed on Oct 14, 2026, and refreshes hourly. Scale adds realtime. It suits teams who want mentions to land in their own systems.
Awario
Awario lists X among its sources and offers a free trial of the Starter plan. Starter is $49 a month, or $29 billed annually, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. If you plan to pull data out, its API page says "Twitter data is not available via Awario API."
Suites that monitor a Twitter account and its mentions
Suites add sentiment, share of voice, team workflows and reports, and they cost more.
Brand24 is self-serve, has a 14-day trial and lists X among its sources. How often it updates depends on the plan: every 12 hours on Individual, hourly on Team and realtime from Pro, as listed on Oct 14, 2026.
Mention lists X alongside Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok and others. It sells one Company plan through a demo and charges extra for the API.
Hootsuite includes basic listening on every plan, covering X, Facebook, Bluesky, YouTube and Quora. It fits teams who already schedule posts there.
Sprinklr documents X as a listening source in its help center and sells through demos.
Brandwatch covers X in its listening products. Developers should note that its data restrictions page says X mentions returned by its API "will have the full text and most of its metadata stripped out."
Do you need a Twitter monitor at all?
For one brand with low volume, probably not. The r/socialmedia post above lists a pinned saved search as a valid free option, and one commenter said they still "keep a saved search tab pinned." If you already check X every day, that costs nothing.
The better case against tools is alert fatigue, not price. In the same thread, one reply warned: "if you alert on everything you start ignoring the channel inside a week." Their fix was to tier it. Instant pings went only to the brand name, the handle and competitor launches, and everything else went into a weekly digest. In r/SaaS, a founder who runs listening said it "Works better on Reddit than Twitter/X because intents are more explicit and conversations are longer". Hear that before you pay for X-only coverage.
Start small. Watch your handle and brand name first, then add a few high-intent phrases ("alternative to", "recommend a"). Widen it only once you're reading what comes in.
Build your own X monitor
If you write code, two endpoints cover most monitoring jobs. GET /v1/x/users/{handle}/mentions returns recent tweets that mention a handle, newest first. GET /v1/x/tweets/search searches tweets with X operators (from:, "exact phrase", OR, -word, min_faves:) and takes sort=latest for monitoring. Each costs 3 credits per page of about 20 tweets.
curl -s "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/x/users/levelsio/mentions" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
Here is a real response, trimmed to one tweet and the useful fields. It came from a test key, which returns one recorded real response per endpoint for free, so charged is 0. A live key charges 3 credits.

The author object lets you filter. This small Python check only surfaces mentions from accounts with some reach:
import os, requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/x/users/yourbrand/mentions",
headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['CHATTERAPI_KEY']}"},
timeout=30,
)
for t in r.json()["data"]:
if (t["author"]["followers"] or 0) >= 1000 and not t["isRetweet"]:
print(t["author"]["handle"], t["url"])
Cost depends on how often you check. One handle every 30 minutes is 48 calls a day, or 4,320 credits a month. Add one keyword search on the same schedule and the total is 8,640, which fits the Starter plan ($19/month for 25,000 credits). Repeat calls with the same input within 10 minutes come from cache and cost the same, so checking more often than that gets you nothing new. ChatterAPI has no built-in alerts yet. You run the schedule yourself, and our Twitter keyword alerts guide has a full script with dedupe and Slack. To try it without code, the free Twitter mentions checker runs the mentions endpoint for any handle.
How to pick a Twitter monitoring tool
Decide what you're watching first:
- If you check your own handle and a few keywords by hand, X advanced search and saved searches are enough.
- If your team wants live columns inside X, use X Pro, assuming you're on Premium+ already.
- If you want keyword alerts in Slack or email, try KWatch.io or Syften, or Octolens if you want webhooks and an API on the base plan.
- If you need sentiment, reports and several networks, look at Brand24, Mention, Hootsuite, Sprinklr or Brandwatch.
- If the mentions have to show up inside your own product or agent, use an API.
If Reddit matters as much as X, our list of the best social listening tools compares tools that watch both, and the brand mention monitor guide covers tracking a brand across both in one call. Before you pay for anything, run the same five or ten searches through each trial for a week and compare what each one catches.
Try ChatterAPI for X monitoring
ChatterAPI gives your code and your agents Reddit and X data through one key, over REST or MCP, and you don't have to apply for a developer account. Sign up with Google to get 100 free credits without a card, which covers 33 mention checks. Plans start at $19/month for 25,000 credits. ChatterAPI is independent of X and Reddit.
