The best social listening tools for Reddit and X in 2026 depend on what you need. F5Bot and KWatch.io are free. For a small team that wants keyword alerts, look at Syften, KWatch.io and Octolens. If you need a full suite with dashboards and reports, the options are Brand24, Mention, Hootsuite, Sprinklr and Brandwatch. Developers who would rather own the pipeline can poll a Reddit and X data API and send matches wherever they like.
We checked everything below on each vendor's own site on Oct 14, 2026. Prices change, so treat them as a snapshot and click through before you buy. One tool many people still recommend no longer exists: GummySearch's homepage says it "is closed as of 11/30/2025" (gummysearch.com, checked Oct 14, 2026).
The best social listening tools at a glance

The first five are keyword alert tools: you give them words and they send you posts that match. The rest are suites that layer sentiment, share of voice and reporting on top. If all you want is a ping when someone on Reddit asks for a tool like yours, you don't need a suite.
Free social listening tools
F5Bot is the oldest free option and still the simplest. It watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for your keywords and emails you when something matches. The homepage says it's "Free to use. No credit card required." X isn't covered. Paid tiers raise the keyword limit, and Gold ($49.99/mo as listed on Oct 14, 2026) adds Slack and Discord webhooks plus RSS and JSON feeds.
KWatch.io has a free plan with two Reddit keyword alerts and two Hacker News alerts. You need a paid plan for X, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube.
Reddit has its own free option for Reddit only. Reddit Pro is free for businesses and lets you track "keywords and phrases like your business, products, competitors, and more" (checked Oct 14, 2026). It runs inside Reddit's own business dashboard.
The rest of the list offers a trial instead of a free plan: Syften (14 days on PRO), Octolens (7 days, up to 5,000 mentions), Brand24 (14 days), Hootsuite (14 days) and Awario (free access to the Starter plan).
Some people skip dedicated tools and use Google. In an r/SaaS thread on Reddit monitoring, one founder wrote that "Most people I know just use Google search operators like site:reddit.com your keywords and set up Google Alerts for that." It costs nothing, but it's slow. The founder behind a popular r/SaaS post on social listening said they "started off with Google Alerts and they were not super reliable" and later switched to a paid tool.
Paid social listening tools for small teams
Syften
Syften covers Reddit, Hacker News, Bluesky, Mastodon, GitHub, YouTube, Stack Exchange, podcasts, newsletters and the web. Its target delay for Reddit is under a minute. X costs $40 a month extra on Standard and PRO and can lag by up to 15 minutes. LinkedIn isn't monitored. Plans start at $29.95 a month, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. A user in r/sideprojects described the setup most people end up with: "track a few brand and problem keywords, whitelist the subs I actually care about, then pipe alerts straight to Slack."
KWatch.io
KWatch.io covers LinkedIn, X, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit and Hacker News. Essential starts at $19 a month, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. You need the $79 Business plan for the API, webhooks, Slack and MCP access. It suits teams that want wide coverage for a low entry price, and it's one of the few tools here that also watches LinkedIn.
Octolens
Octolens targets B2B and developer-tool companies and watches a long list of sources: Reddit, X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, GitHub, YouTube, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, DEV, podcasts, newsletters and news. Pro is $159 a month billed annually, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. Every plan includes an API, webhooks and an MCP server, which makes it the most developer-friendly of the hosted alert tools here.
Awario
Awario lists X, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, blogs, forums and news as sources. Starter is $49 a month, or $29 a month billed annually, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. Its API page says an API key requires Enterprise, and adds: "Twitter data is not available via Awario API."
Social listening suites for larger teams
Brand24 is the most self-serve of the suites. It lists X and Reddit among its sources and adds sentiment, reach and reports. Individual is $249 a month, or $199 billed annually, with three keywords, as listed on Oct 14, 2026. The API costs extra.
Mention lists Facebook, Instagram, X, Reddit, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube, plus news, blogs, forums and review sites. Its pricing page shows a single Company plan behind a demo, and the API and historical data are paid add-ons.
Hootsuite has basic listening on every plan, covering Facebook, X, Bluesky, YouTube and Quora. Reddit needs the Talkwalker-powered upgrade, which Hootsuite says is for Enterprise customers. Talkwalker has since been folded into Hootsuite and now goes by Lumen by Talkwalker.
Sprinklr documents both Reddit and X as listening sources and sells through demos.
If Reddit history matters to you, check Brandwatch carefully. Its August 2026 coverage notice cut Reddit history to 13 months in Consumer Research and 12 months in Listen, and removed Reddit fields such as score and flair. Any tool that resells Reddit data is exposed to changes on Reddit's side. Our Reddit API shutdown timeline covers the dates that matter there.
Is social listening worth it? The case against
Every tool above assumes social listening finds customers, and not everyone agrees. When a founder asked r/SaaS whether it's "actually a viable growth strategy", the top reply was blunt: "maybe 1 in 20 interactions actually leads to a demo, and even fewer convert to paying customers" (u/Possible_Stomach870). The same person blamed timing, since "most complaints are venting rather than active shopping."
Another reply raised competition for the same posts: "By the time you see the complaint, so has everyone else" (comment). These are individual reports, not measured rates. They do fit a common pattern, though. Tools make finding posts easy, and writing a reply worth reading is still the hard part.
The same thread had a useful counterpoint about what to listen for. One founder wrote that "complaint keywords get you venting, not buying," and that the signal is someone asking "what are people using instead of X." Another said listening "Works better on Reddit than Twitter/X because intents are more explicit and conversations are longer" (u/botyard). Timing matters as well. In the first-100-customers thread, a commenter found "engaging within 24-48 hours of someone posting their problem makes a huge difference."
Whichever tool you pick, track questions and problem phrases along with brand names, and check alerts daily. If the goal is marketing on Reddit, read each subreddit's rules first, or hand the work to a team that does done-for-you Reddit marketing.
Build your own social listening tool with an API
If you write code, you can skip the per-keyword pricing and build the alert loop yourself. It works the same way as every tool above: search for new posts and comments that match your terms, drop the ones you've already seen, and send the rest somewhere.
ChatterAPI gives you Reddit and X search behind one key. GET /v1/reddit/comments/search searches Reddit comments, where many recommendations and complaints live. Use sort=new for monitoring, because comment search has no time filter. Each page costs 2 credits.
curl -s "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/reddit/comments/search?q=gummysearch+alternative&sort=new" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
This is a real response, trimmed to one comment. The comment is an older one because the test key always returns the same recording. We ran it with a test key, which returns one recorded real response per endpoint for free, so charged is 0. A live key charges 2 credits.

A minimal listener in Python polls Reddit posts, Reddit comments and X for each keyword, and prints anything new:
import json, os, pathlib, requests
API = "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1"
H = {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['CHATTERAPI_KEY']}"}
KEYWORDS = ['"alternative to brand24"', '"social listening tool"']
SEEN = pathlib.Path("seen.json")
seen = set(json.loads(SEEN.read_text())) if SEEN.exists() else set()
ENDPOINTS = [
("reddit/search", {"sort": "new", "time": "day"}), # posts, 2 credits
("reddit/comments/search", {"sort": "new"}), # comments, 2 credits
("x/tweets/search", {"sort": "latest"}), # tweets, 3 credits
]
for kw in KEYWORDS:
for path, params in ENDPOINTS:
r = requests.get(f"{API}/{path}", params={"q": kw, **params}, headers=H, timeout=30)
if r.status_code != 200:
continue # failed calls cost 0 credits
for item in r.json()["data"]:
if item["id"] not in seen:
seen.add(item["id"])
print(item.get("url"), (item.get("title") or item.get("body") or item.get("text", ""))[:120])
SEEN.write_text(json.dumps(list(seen)[-20000:]))
Run it hourly from cron and swap the print for a Slack webhook. Each keyword costs 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 credits per run. Two keywords hourly is 14 × 24 × 30 = 10,080 credits a month, which fits the Starter plan ($19/month for 25,000 credits). If you only want brand names, GET /v1/mentions does all three searches in one call for up to 7 credits, and our guide to building a brand mention monitor walks through it. For a Reddit-only version with comment paging and costs, see how to monitor Reddit for keywords.
The trade-off is that you get no dashboard, no sentiment charts and no push alerts unless you build them. ChatterAPI doesn't run scheduled alerts for you yet, so you handle the polling. If you're comparing data sources rather than dashboards, our social listening APIs comparison covers the developer options side by side.
How to choose among the best social listening tools
Start with the platforms. If X matters, rule out F5Bot, check what Syften charges for its add-on, and remember that Hootsuite only covers Reddit on Enterprise. Then decide whether you want alerts or analysis. Alert tools (F5Bot, KWatch, Syften, Octolens, Awario) cost less and take less time to set up. Suites (Brand24, Mention, Hootsuite, Sprinklr, Brandwatch) add the reporting your marketing team may need. If you want the raw matches in your own code or your own agent, use an API. For X specifically, our list of Twitter monitoring tools goes deeper.
Before you pay, try what one r/SaaS commenter suggested: "write 10 sample queries (brand, misspellings, competitor + complaint words) and ask how they'd filter false positives." Run the same queries through each trial and compare the results.
Try ChatterAPI
ChatterAPI gives your code and your agents Reddit and X data through one key, over REST or MCP, and you don't have to apply for a developer account. Sign up with Google to get 100 free credits without entering a card, then run the script above on your own keywords. If you'd rather try a search first, use the free brand mentions tool. Plans start at $19/month for 25,000 credits. ChatterAPI is independent of Reddit and X, and its Reddit endpoints are read-only.
