Reddit MCP server: give Claude, Cursor or Codex live Reddit data

Set up a Reddit MCP server in Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Codex in two minutes, with exact configs, example prompts and real tool results.

A Reddit MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or Codex search Reddit and read threads on their own while they work on your task. Setup means adding a server URL and an API key to your client's MCP config. For ChatterAPI's hosted server in Claude Code, that takes one command, with no Reddit developer account and nothing to install locally.

This guide covers setup: exact configs for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Codex, prompts that work well, and real tool results that show what your agent gets back. If you haven't picked a server yet, we compared the open-source and hosted options in the best MCP servers for Reddit and X.

Why a Reddit MCP server needs credentials in 2026

Until this year, many Reddit MCP servers read Reddit's public .json endpoints with no key at all. That stopped working. In May 2026 a developer in r/ClaudeAI wrote: "If you've noticed your Reddit MCP server suddenly returning nothing, here's why: Reddit now blocks anonymous access to its JSON API at the network level." They tested from a home IP, a VPN and a paid residential proxy, and "all of them get blocked" (thread). A follow-up PSA was more precise: "Reddit only killed the ANONYMOUS path" (thread).

Reddit's own Data API Wiki (checked 2026-10-14) says clients "must authenticate with a registered OAuth token" and that traffic "not using OAuth or login credentials will be blocked." New OAuth credentials now require a manual request to Reddit, and our guide on how to get a Reddit API key walks through it.

That leaves two routes: run an open-source server with your own approved Reddit app, or point your client at a hosted Reddit MCP server that handles access for you. The rest of this guide sets up the hosted route with ChatterAPI, an independent API not affiliated with Reddit.

Before you start

  1. Sign up with Google to get 100 free credits. No card needed.
  2. On the Keys page in the dashboard, create a key. Live keys start with ca_live_ and test keys start with ca_test_.
  3. Put it in your shell: export CHATTERAPI_KEY=ca_live_...

Use a test key while you wire things up. Every tool returns a recorded real sample for 0 credits, so you can confirm the config works before you spend anything. When you want real results for your own queries, switch to a live key.

Install the Reddit MCP server in your client

The server URL is https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp, and it uses the Streamable HTTP transport. The configs below come from the MCP server page. We checked each one against that client's docs on 2026-10-14.

Claude Code

Run this once in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http chatterapi https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"

To check it, run claude mcp list. chatterapi should show as connected. That is all the claude reddit mcp setup takes.

Claude Desktop

Open Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config, and add this to claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "chatterapi": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp", "--header", "Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}"],
      "env": { "AUTH_HEADER": "Bearer YOUR_KEY" }
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop's config file runs local commands, so this config uses the mcp-remote bridge to send the key header. The bridge needs Node 18 or newer. Quit and reopen Claude Desktop, then open the connectors menu under the message box, where chatterapi appears with its tools.

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json to cover all projects, or to .cursor/mcp.json for a single project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "chatterapi": {
      "url": "https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:CHATTERAPI_KEY}" }
    }
  }
}

${env:CHATTERAPI_KEY} reads the key from your environment. In Cursor Settings, open MCP. The server shows a green dot next to its tool count.

Codex

Add this to ~/.codex/config.toml:

[mcp_servers.chatterapi]
url = "https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "CHATTERAPI_KEY"

Run codex mcp list and you should see chatterapi in the list. Configs for Windsurf and VS Code are on the same MCP server page. The MCP docs cover the protocol details.

What tools your agent gets

On 2026-10-14, tools/list returned 36 tools: 14 Reddit reads, 13 X reads, 4 X actions, 3 cross-platform tools and 2 free account tools. Two more Reddit tools, for 18+ content, show up only after you turn them on in Settings. A tool's name is its REST id with the dots replaced by underscores, so reddit.search becomes reddit_search.

These are the Reddit tools you'll call most often:

MCP toolWhat it doesCredits
reddit_searchPosts by keyword, across Reddit or one subreddit2 per page
reddit_search_commentsComments by keyword or author2
reddit_threadA post plus its comments, flat list with parentId3 per page
reddit_subredditSize, rules, moderators, posting settings2
reddit_subreddit_postsHot, new, top, rising feeds2
reddit_communitiesSubreddits for a topic2
reddit_user_statusActive, suspended or not found2
reddit_leadsPosts ranked by buying intent4
chatterapi_accountBalance, plan, rate limit0

All of the Reddit tools are read-only. Their annotations carry readOnlyHint: true, and none of them can post, comment or vote. A call that fails costs 0 credits. The endpoint docs have the full list with parameters.

Prompts that work with a Reddit MCP server

The agent picks which tool to call based on your prompt, so name the job, the subreddit or the time window. Prompts like these work well:

  • "Search r/SaaS for posts from the last month about churn, then pull the top two threads and summarize what people blame."
  • "What are the rules in r/SaaS? Can I post a link to my product there?"
  • "Find subreddits where people discuss cold email, and tell me which ones allow self-promotion."
  • "Read this thread and list every tool people recommend, with how many upvotes each recommendation got: https://www.reddit.com/r/CRM/comments/1wdihhj/"
  • "Check my balance first, then search Reddit for 'notion alternative' and stop if it would cost more than 20 credits."

For a longer worked example, see how to find customer pain points on Reddit with Claude.

Real tool results

These are the responses your agent gets, so you can predict how it will reason with them. All three were recorded with a test key, which returns one real sample per tool at no cost, and then trimmed to the useful fields.

Subreddit rules

Asking "What are the rules in r/SaaS?" makes the client send this tools/call:

{ "method": "tools/call", "params": { "name": "reddit_subreddit", "arguments": { "name": "SaaS" } } }
{
  "structuredContent": {
    "data": {
      "name": "SaaS",
      "title": "Software as a Service",
      "subscribers": 820451,
      "createdAt": "2008-07-31T21:06:38.000Z",
      "rules": [
        { "title": "Submission Guidelines", "appliesTo": "all" },
        { "title": "No Vendor Spam on posts or comments",
          "description": "Promotion is allowed occasionally, but accounts focused solely on it will be removed.\n- __Limit:__ Max 1 mention or 3 links can be shared every 60 days ...",
          "appliesTo": "all" }
      ],
      "moderators": [{ "name": "AutoModerator", "since": "2026-04-24T08:36:04.000Z" }],
      "posting": { "submissionType": "any", "restrictPosting": true, "allowImages": true, "allowPolls": false }
    },
    "credits": { "charged": 0, "remaining": 719 }
  }
}

The sample had 11 rules and 9 moderators. A live key charges 2 credits. Make this call before an agent drafts anything for a community. The rule above caps promotion at one mention or three links every 60 days.

{ "method": "tools/call", "params": { "name": "reddit_search", "arguments": { "q": "best crm for small business", "time": "year" } } }
{
  "structuredContent": {
    "data": [
      {
        "id": "1wdihhj",
        "title": "What CRM should a small business use?",
        "author": "NotedWhisky",
        "subreddit": "CRM",
        "score": 51,
        "numComments": 186,
        "createdAt": "2026-09-11T14:52:16.000Z",
        "url": "https://www.reddit.com/r/CRM/comments/1wdihhj/what_crm_should_a_small_business_use/"
      }
    ],
    "page": { "nextCursor": "AX-vad04…", "hasMore": true },
    "credits": { "charged": 0, "remaining": 719 }
  }
}

One page holds up to 25 posts and costs 2 credits on a live key. To get more, the agent passes page.nextCursor back as cursor.

A thread with comments

{ "method": "tools/call", "params": { "name": "reddit_thread", "arguments": { "id": "1wdihhj" } } }
{
  "structuredContent": {
    "data": {
      "post": { "id": "1wdihhj", "title": "What CRM should a small business use?", "score": 52, "upvoteRatio": 0.96 },
      "comments": [
        {
          "id": "p9636y0",
          "parentId": null,
          "author": "OstrichSome3412",
          "body": "Just a FYI, don’t buy for the company you imagine having in 5 years. Buy for the next 12 or 18 months and make sure exporting your data isn’t painful if you eventually need something heavier.",
          "score": 6
        }
      ],
      "reportedCommentCount": 186
    },
    "page": { "nextCursor": null, "hasMore": false },
    "credits": { "charged": 0, "remaining": 719 }
  }
}

The sample returned 101 comments, but Reddit reported 186 for the thread. That gap is normal because no thread API loads every comment on a large thread. Tell your agent to compare comments.length with reportedCommentCount before it claims "everyone in the thread said". A live key charges 3 credits per page.

Keep your agent's spending in check

Agents loop, so give them a budget.

  • Every result ends with credits.charged and credits.remaining. The server's instructions tell the agent to check remaining before a long loop.
  • chatterapi_account is free. Have the agent call it first and stop when the balance drops below a number you pick.
  • Pass a small limit. Each page is charged once, and short pages keep the agent's context clean.
  • When the balance runs out, the tool result says so. The agent is told to stop and tell you instead of retrying.
  • MCP and REST draw from one balance at the same prices, so a script and an agent can share a key.

When an open-source Reddit MCP server is the better pick

A hosted server isn't always the right choice. If you already have an approved Reddit app, an open-source server like Reddit MCP Buddy or jordanburke's reddit-mcp-server costs nothing beyond your time, and your data goes straight from Reddit to your machine. If your agent needs to post or reply, you need a server with write tools, such as jordanburke's, because ChatterAPI's Reddit tools are read-only. Before building their own, one team in r/mcp read the source of 13 existing Reddit servers and counted "97 tools. 74 read (search, fetch, summarize), 16 write (post, comment, edit, delete), 7 other" (thread).

The hosted route fits when you can't get Reddit credentials, when you want Reddit and X on one key, or when your team uses several clients and would rather paste one URL than maintain a local process on every machine. Whichever you pick, read Reddit's terms for your use case. Reddit is also tightening public access through 2027. Our Reddit API shutdown timeline has the dates, and why AI can't read Reddit and X covers the background.

Try it

ChatterAPI gives your code and your agents Reddit and X data through one key, over REST or MCP, and you don't have to apply for a developer account. Sign up with Google to get 100 free credits without entering a card. That covers about 50 Reddit searches. Paste the config for your client, restart it, and ask about a subreddit you care about. Plans start at $19 a month for 25,000 credits.

FAQ

How do I add a Reddit MCP server to Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add --transport http chatterapi https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY", then run claude mcp list to confirm it's connected. Ask Claude to search a subreddit and it calls the reddit_search tool.
Does a Reddit MCP server need Reddit API keys?
Open-source Reddit MCP servers that call Reddit directly need your own Reddit OAuth credentials, because Reddit blocks unauthenticated API traffic. A hosted server like ChatterAPI uses its own access, so you only need a ChatterAPI key.
Can a Reddit MCP server post to Reddit?
Some open-source servers can, using your Reddit username and password. ChatterAPI's Reddit tools are read-only by design, so your agent can search and read but never post, comment or vote.
Is the Reddit MCP server free?
ChatterAPI gives 100 free credits at signup with no card, and a Reddit search costs 2 credits, so that's about 50 searches. Test keys return recorded samples for free while you set things up. Paid plans start at $19 a month for 25,000 credits.
Which AI apps work with a Reddit MCP server?
Any MCP client. ChatterAPI documents setup for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf and VS Code. Clients that only speak stdio can connect through the mcp-remote bridge.
