Social listening APIs compared for developers (2026)
A developer comparison of social listening API options for Reddit and X: platform APIs, listening-suite APIs and data APIs, with access, limits and pricing.

A social listening API returns public posts that match your keywords as JSON, and your own code decides what to store, filter and alert on. For Reddit and X there are three families: the platforms' own APIs, the APIs behind listening suites like Brandwatch, Brand24 and Mention, and raw social media data APIs that you query and poll yourself. The main differences are access (self-serve or a sales call), delivery (push or pull) and billing.
This post is written for developers. If you want a dashboard with alerts rather than an endpoint, our list of the best social listening tools covers that side. Every vendor fact below was checked on the vendor's own site or docs on Oct 14, 2026.
What a social listening API gives you
All of these return roughly the same thing: a post or comment, its author, a timestamp, a link and some engagement numbers. These are the differences that matter when you build on one:
- Most APIs are pull: you call search on a schedule and dedupe the results. A few push new matches through webhooks or a stream, so you can skip the polling loop.
- Listening suites store your saved queries ("projects", "alerts") and you fetch what they matched. Data APIs take the query on each request.
- Suites charge a subscription plus an API add-on. Data APIs charge per request, per result or per credit.
- Suites keep an archive of everything they've matched. Data APIs only search what the platform's own search returns.

Official platform APIs
X API
The X API pricing page lists pay-per-usage credits with no subscription tiers: $0.005 per post read and $0.010 per user read as of Oct 14, 2026. Post reads are capped at 3 million per billing cycle, and past that you need Enterprise. The rate limits page allows recent search 450 requests per 15 minutes per app, and recent search covers the last 7 days. If X is all you need, this is the source of record, and it's self-serve.
Reddit data API
Reddit is closing public API access in stages. In a September 30, 2026 post on r/redditdev, it said new access requests stop on October 31, 2026, and public access ends for the remaining apps in March 2027 (r/redditdev, checked Oct 14, 2026). If you already have keys, keep using them while they work. Our Reddit API shutdown timeline lists every date, and Reddit API pricing covers what Reddit charges.
Listening platforms with a social media monitoring API
These are suites first and APIs second. You set up queries inside their app, and the API pulls the matched mentions into your own systems.
Brandwatch's developer docs cover projects, queries, mentions and alerts, and the default rate limit is 30 requests per rolling 10 minutes. There are two caveats for Reddit and X work. Its data restrictions page says an X post mention "will have the full text and most of its metadata stripped out", and it recommends fetching the full post from the X API by id. Its August 2026 notice also cut Reddit history in Consumer Research to 13 months.
Talkwalker's developer site documents a Search API, an Export Task API, a Histogram API and a Streaming API, all billed in credits. Its pricing page lists plans by custom quote.
Brand24 sells the API as a paid add-on to a self-serve plan. The pricing page lists it at $149 extra, on plans from $199 a month billed annually (as listed on Oct 14, 2026).
Mention has a REST API with OAuth2 that can create alerts, fetch mentions and stream them, per its developer docs. The pricing page marks API access as a paid add-on.
Awario's API page says you need Enterprise or a custom plan to get a key, and that "Twitter data is not available via Awario API." Rate limits are 300 requests per minute per token.
Octolens and Syften are lighter alert tools with developer hooks. Octolens includes a REST API, webhooks (one POST per mention, with retries) and an MCP server on every plan. Syften has an API on all plans and webhooks on PRO, with X as a $40 add-on.
Social media data APIs and scrapers
These tools don't store your queries. You send a search, get rows back, and your own code handles everything after that.
Data365 is a REST API covering Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, Reddit and others. It runs asynchronously: you POST to start a collection, poll its status, then GET the result (Reddit docs). As listed on Oct 14, 2026, Basic costs €300 a month for one network and 500,000 credits, with a 14-day trial.
Apify runs community-built actors on its own platform. The Reddit actor lists "from $0.10 / 1,000 results" plus platform usage, and the tweet actor lists "from $0.40 / 1,000 tweets". The tweet actor's page says short-interval monitoring isn't allowed, so it won't fit if you planned to poll every few minutes.
ScrapeCreators is a credit-based REST API with Reddit and Twitter endpoints among its 38 APIs. As listed on Oct 14, 2026, the free tier gives 100 credits and Freelance costs $47 for 25,000 credits (scrapecreators.com).
Bright Data's scrapers library includes Reddit and X scrapers, delivered by API, webhook, cloud storage or streaming. The free tier page lists 5,000 free credits a month. We couldn't load its paid per-record pricing.
The case for buying a dashboard instead
A raw API costs less per row, but you take on the work the suites were doing for you. Noise is the biggest piece of it. In an r/AskMarketing thread on Reddit keyword tracking, the founder of Octolens (a listening tool) wrote that "about 70% of the Reddit posts matching our customer keyword in our system still get scored irrelevant after considering filters." That's one team's number, not a benchmark. Still, anyone who has run a keyword search on Reddit will recognise the shape of it.
Dedupe and plumbing come next. When someone shared a large n8n social listening workflow in r/n8n, a top reply was "Seems like a lot of de-duplication to be done!" (comment). History is the other gap: a commenter in r/SaaS pointed out that many monitoring tools are "fully reliant on Reddit's API, so they don't have historical data."
If your team needs sentiment, share of voice, a two-year archive and reports for people who don't write code, buy a suite. A data API fits when the mentions feed something you're building: a product feature, an internal alert, a lead queue or an AI agent that reads them.
Calling a social listening API: a working example
Here is the pull model with ChatterAPI. GET /v1/search searches Reddit and X with one query and returns a single merged list. A page from both platforms costs 5 credits: 2 for the Reddit side and 3 for the X side. Use sort=new for monitoring.
curl -s "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/search?q=crm+recommendation&sort=new&time=week" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
This is a real response, trimmed to two items. It's a sample. We ran it with a test key, which returns one recorded real response per endpoint regardless of input, so charged is 0. A live key charges 5 credits.

Every item has the same shape whichever platform it came from, so one handler covers both. Here is a JavaScript poll that forwards new items to a webhook:
const seen = new Set(); // persist this between runs in real use
async function poll(q) {
const url = new URL("https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/search");
url.search = new URLSearchParams({ q, sort: "new", time: "day" });
const res = await fetch(url, { headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.CHATTERAPI_KEY}` } });
if (!res.ok) return; // failed calls cost 0 credits
const { data } = await res.json();
for (const item of data) {
if (seen.has(item.id)) continue;
seen.add(item.id);
await fetch(process.env.WEBHOOK_URL, {
method: "POST",
headers: { "Content-Type": "application/json" },
body: JSON.stringify({ text: `[${item.platform}] ${item.text.slice(0, 200)}\n${item.url}` }),
});
}
}
await poll('"crm recommendation"');
The same endpoints are tools on the hosted MCP server at https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp (everywhere_search, reddit_search, x_search), so an agent in Claude, Cursor or Codex can run the search directly. Repeat calls with the same input within 10 minutes are served from cache and cost the same, so there's no point polling a query more often than that. ChatterAPI has no webhooks or scheduled alerts of its own yet. If what you're tracking is a brand name, GET /v1/mentions adds Reddit comments, alternate spellings and author exclusions, and our brand mention monitor guide builds a daily digest on it.
Which social media monitoring API fits
- If you only need X, at volume, use the official X API. It's self-serve and pay-per-use.
- If your marketing team already uses a suite (Brandwatch, Brand24, Mention, Talkwalker), add that suite's API so both teams see the same mentions.
- If you want push delivery without writing a poller, use Octolens or Syften webhooks.
- For batch collection across many networks, use Data365 or Apify actors.
- For Reddit and X in your own code or agent, paid per call, use a data API such as ChatterAPI or ScrapeCreators.
Whichever you pick, test it with your real keywords before you commit. Run the same five queries through each candidate and compare the rows you get back. You can try ours without code in the free search everywhere tool.
Try the ChatterAPI social media API
ChatterAPI gives your code and your agents Reddit and X data through one key, over REST or MCP, and you don't need to apply for a developer account. Sign up with Google to get 100 free credits without a card, enough for 20 cross-platform searches. Plans start at $19/month for 25,000 credits. ChatterAPI is independent of Reddit and X, and its Reddit endpoints are read-only.
