Reddit and X data in CrewAI

CrewAI connects to ChatterAPI's hosted MCP server with MCPServerHTTP, so each agent in a crew can search Reddit and X, find leads and read threads. The key goes in a header.

MCP server URLhttps://api.chatterapi.com/mcp

What you get

  • Reddit and X tools for any agent in a crew, discovered from the server.
  • Lead finding and brand mentions are single calls, so a research agent spends fewer steps.
  • Every result shows the credits it used.

Set it up

  1. Create an API key

    Sign in at chatterapi.com/signup with Google and create a key on the Keys page. You get 100 free credits. A ca_test_ key returns recorded samples for 0 credits, which helps while you set things up.

  2. Install CrewAI with MCP support

    CrewAI's docs install the MCP extras with it.

    terminal
    uv pip install 'crewai-tools[mcp]'
  3. Attach the server to an agent

    Pass MCPServerHTTP in the agent's mcps list with the header. cache_tools_list means tools aren't listed again on every run.

    crew.py
    import os
    from crewai import Agent
    from crewai.mcp import MCPServerHTTP

    researcher = Agent(
        role="Market researcher",
        goal="Find people on Reddit and X looking for a CRM",
        backstory="You read social threads and report what buyers ask for.",
        mcps=[
            MCPServerHTTP(
                url="https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp",
                headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['CHATTERAPI_KEY']}"},
                streamable=True,
                cache_tools_list=True,
            )
        ],
    )

A lead search from the crew

The researcher calls everywhere_leads with arguments like these. The response is from a real recorded call.

Limits worth knowing

  • MCPServerHTTP takes a url, headers, streamable and cache_tools_list. source
  • CrewAI's MCP integration times out after 10 seconds when connecting, 30 seconds for tool execution and 15 seconds for discovery. Slow reads can hit the 30 second limit, so keep limit small. source

Questions

Does it cost more through CrewAI than through REST?
No. MCP and REST call the same tools, cost the same credits and draw from one balance.
Can I try it without spending credits?
Yes. Use a ca_test_ key. Every tool returns a recorded sample for 0 credits, whatever you ask.
Is ChatterAPI part of Reddit or X?
No. ChatterAPI is independent and not affiliated with Reddit, Inc. or X Corp.
