Market research on Reddit and X

People go to Reddit and X to say what they want in their own words. You can search posts by keyword, pull whole threads with their comments, and size up the communities where they're posted, from one API or a few free tools.

The job

Surveys tell you what people answer when asked. Threads show what they say when nobody is asking: the workarounds, the price they balk at, the feature that makes them leave a product.

The research loop has three steps: search, read, size. Find the posts, pull the full discussion, then check whether the community is big and active enough to matter. Each step is one call.

How it works

  1. Find the conversations

Search Reddit posts by keyword and time window, and search X for the same terms.

  2. Read the full threads

Pull each promising post with its comment tree. Most of the signal is in the replies.

  3. Size the communities

Search for related subreddits and check members and activity before you weigh what you read.

  4. Summarise with an agent

Hand the threads to Claude or another agent over MCP and ask for themes, quotes and counts. See the Claude Code setup.

Recorded from a live call on . Long text is shortened and the cursor is cut. A live key is charged 2 credits for this call. A test key returns this same sample for 0 credits.

What it won't do

  • ChatterAPI reads live Reddit and X. It does not return posts or comments that were deleted or removed.
  • Reddit search returns what Reddit's own search finds, so very old or niche posts may not appear.
  • A thread call returns comments one page at a time, so very large threads take several calls.

Questions

How much does a research run cost?
A Reddit search is 2 credits and a thread is 3. One search followed by 20 threads costs 62 credits.
Can I get the data into a spreadsheet?
Yes. The free tools and the dashboard playground download CSV, and the Google Sheets guide has a script.
Can I quote what I find?
Quote with care and link to the source. When you publish, follow Reddit's and X's terms and the community's norms.
