- Collect accounts that accept DMs for a small, targeted outreach test.
How Twitter user search matches accounts
Twitter user search on X looks at names, handles and bios, and the matching is deliberately loose. A search for "crm founder" can return a CRM vendor, a founder who mentions CRM once, and a consultant who sells CRM setup. Each result shows the bio so you can judge fit at a glance.
A few habits give better lists:
- Use the words people write about themselves. "founder", "head of growth" and "indie hacker" show up in bios far more often than "decision maker".
- Pair a role with a topic. "devrel kubernetes" is sharper than either word alone.
- Try a second phrasing. "growth marketer" and "growth marketing" return different people.
- Check the counts. Very new accounts with no tweets are often abandoned or spam.
The free page shows the first rows of one page of results. Empty bios show as n/a.
Already know the handle?
If you know the exact account, skip the search. The X User Lookup returns that one profile directly. To read what the account posts, use the X Timeline Scraper.
Searching bios is only one way to find accounts that already care about a topic. The followers of a competitor (X Follower Exporter) or the members of a curated list (X List Members) are often closer to what you need.
Search for accounts from your code
The same search runs through the API at /docs/tools/x-user-search. Each page returns profiles plus a cursor for the next page, so a script or an AI agent can page through results and filter on bio text, follower count or DM status.
