Reddit and X data in ChatGPT
ChatGPT's custom MCP connectors accept only OAuth or no sign-in. ChatterAPI's MCP server needs an API key, so the connector route doesn't work today. A custom GPT does: import our OpenAPI file as an Action, set API key auth, and the GPT can call the REST API.
https://api.chatterapi.com/v1What you get
- A custom GPT that searches Reddit and X, reads threads and looks up users through the REST API.
- The same endpoints and credit costs as any other client, from one balance.
- No Reddit or X developer account.
Set it up
Create an API key
Sign in at chatterapi.com/signup with Google and create a key on the Keys page. You get 100 free credits. A
ca_test_key returns recorded samples for 0 credits, which helps while you set things up.Create a GPT and add an Action
In the GPT editor, open Configure, then Create new action. Import the schema from our OpenAPI file, which lists every endpoint and its parameters.
OpenAPI schema URLhttps://api.chatterapi.com/openapi.jsonSet authentication
Choose API Key, set the auth type to Bearer and paste your key. ChatGPT then sends
Authorization: Bearerwith each call. The option names in the editor can change, so check them there.Test the key outside ChatGPT
If the GPT can't connect, check the key with a free call. It returns your balance and costs 0 credits.
terminalcurl "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/account" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"
What a call returns
A comment search through the Action returns JSON like this, from a real recorded call.
curl "https://api.chatterapi.com/v1/reddit/comments/search?q=gummysearch+alternative" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $CHATTERAPI_KEY"{

Limits worth knowing
- ChatGPT's apps and connectors can't present custom API keys, so you can't add a key-only MCP server as an authenticated connector. source
- GPT Actions support None, API Key or OAuth authentication. source
- Actions time out after 45 seconds round trip, and requests and responses must each stay under 100,000 characters. Pass a small
limit. source - Actions don't support custom headers beyond the authentication you set. source
- If OpenAI adds API key support to MCP connectors, the hosted MCP server will work there too. Until then, use the Action route.
