Reddit and X data in VS Code
Add ChatterAPI to .vscode/mcp.json and Copilot's agent mode in VS Code can search Reddit and X and read full threads. VS Code asks for the key once and stores it, so the file holds no secret.
https://api.chatterapi.com/mcpWhat you get
- Every live Reddit and X tool is available as an MCP tool: search, threads, subreddits, users, followers, timelines, leads and brand mentions.
- Each result includes
credits.chargedandcredits.remaining, so the agent can see what it spent. - Every key gets two free tools:
chatterapi_accountfor your balance andchatterapi_list_toolsfor every tool and its cost. - You don't need a Reddit or X developer account. The key also works for REST calls, from the same credit balance.
Set it up
Create an API key
Sign in at chatterapi.com/signup with Google and create a key on the Keys page. You get 100 free credits. A
ca_test_key returns recorded samples for 0 credits, which is handy while you set things up.Add the server
Create
.vscode/mcp.jsonin your workspace, or run MCP: Open User Configuration from the Command Palette to cover every workspace. Theinputsblock makes VS Code prompt for the key..vscode/mcp.json{ "inputs": [ { "type": "promptString", "id": "chatterapi-key", "description": "ChatterAPI API key", "password": true } ], "servers": { "chatterapi": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.chatterapi.com/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:chatterapi-key}" } } } }Start it
Run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette and start chatterapi. VS Code asks for the key the first time. Then open Copilot Chat in agent mode.
Try a thread
Ask about a Reddit post and the agent calls reddit_thread with its id. The response below is a real recorded call.
Read this Reddit thread and sum up the main recommendations: 1wdihhj

Limits worth knowing
- VS Code allows at most 128 enabled tools per chat request. If you run several servers, turn off the tools you don't need. source
- Servers go in
.vscode/mcp.jsonor your user profile, withtype, urlandheadersfor HTTP servers. source - In organisations on Copilot Business or Enterprise, an admin has to allow MCP servers in Copilot. source

Questions
Does it cost more through VS Code than through REST?
Can I try it without spending credits?
ca_test_ key. Every tool returns a recorded sample for 0 credits, whatever you ask.
