Reddit and X data in Windsurf

Add ChatterAPI to Cascade's mcp_config.json and the Windsurf agent can search Reddit and X, find subreddits and read threads. It uses a serverUrl and a header, and reads the key from your environment.

What you get

  • Every live Reddit and X tool is available as an MCP tool: search, threads, subreddits, users, followers, timelines, leads and brand mentions.
  • Each result includes credits.charged and credits.remaining, so the agent can see what it spent.
  • Every key gets two free tools: chatterapi_account for your balance and chatterapi_list_tools for every tool and its cost.
  • You don't need a Reddit or X developer account. The same key works for REST calls and draws from the same credit balance.

Set it up

  1. Create an API key

    Sign in at chatterapi.com/signup with Google and create a key on the Keys page. You get 100 free credits. A ca_test_ key returns recorded samples for 0 credits, which is handy during setup.

  2. Open the MCP config

    In Cascade, open MCP servers and click View raw config. Current docs put the file at ~/.config/devin/mcp_config.json on macOS and Linux, and %APPDATA%\devin\mcp_config.json on Windows. Older installs used ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json.

  3. Add the server

    ${env:CHATTERAPI_KEY} reads the key from your environment. You can paste the key there instead.

  4. Refresh

    Press refresh in the MCP servers panel. The tools show up under chatterapi.

Limits worth knowing

  • Cascade can use at most 100 tools at a time across all servers. If you add many servers, turn off the tools you don't use. source
  • The config supports ${env:VAR} and ${file:/path} interpolation. source
  • On Enterprise plans MCP has to be turned on in settings, and Team or Enterprise admins can control MCP access. source

Does it cost more through Windsurf than through REST?
No. MCP and REST call the same tools, cost the same credits and draw from one balance.
