Reddit and X data in Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop connects to ChatterAPI through the small mcp-remote bridge. It runs on your machine and sends your key as a header. Paste one block into the config file, restart Claude, and it can search Reddit and X.

What you get

  • Every live Reddit and X tool is available as an MCP tool: search, threads, subreddits, users, followers, timelines, leads and brand mentions.
  • Each result includes credits.charged and credits.remaining, so the agent can see what it spent.
  • Every key gets two free tools: chatterapi_account for your balance and chatterapi_list_tools for every tool and its cost.
  • You don't need a Reddit or X developer account. The same key works for REST calls too, from the same credit balance.

Set it up

  1. Create an API key

    Sign in at chatterapi.com/signup with Google and create a key on the Keys page. You get 100 free credits. A ca_test_ key returns recorded samples for 0 credits, which helps while you set things up.

  2. Open the config file

    In Claude Desktop, open Settings, Developer, Edit Config. On macOS the file is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. On Windows it is %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json.

  3. Add the server

    Paste this block and put your key after Bearer. Leave no space around the colon in Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}. You need Node 18 or newer.

  4. Restart and check

    Quit and reopen Claude Desktop, then open the connectors menu under the message box. You should see chatterapi listed with its tools.

Limits worth knowing

  • Custom connectors added in Settings work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free is limited to one custom connector. source
  • Sending a request header from a custom connector is in beta for a limited set of organisations. Without that, the connector only offers OAuth or no sign-in, so use the mcp-remote config instead. source
  • The mcp-remote README recommends no spaces around the colon in the header argument because of an argument bug in npx on Windows. source
  • Claude Desktop starts the local servers in claude_desktop_config.json itself. source

Questions

Why not add it as a custom connector?
Custom connectors can only send a key header for organisations in a limited beta. The mcp-remote bridge works on every plan.
Does it cost more through Claude Desktop than through REST?
No. MCP and REST call the same tools, cost the same credits and draw from one balance.
Can I try it without spending credits?
Yes. Use a ca_test_ key. Every tool returns a recorded sample for 0 credits, whatever you ask.
Is ChatterAPI part of Reddit or X?
No. ChatterAPI is independent and not affiliated with Reddit, Inc. or X Corp.
